The translation of an exerpt from Alexander Shipov's poem dedicated to his wife and sons:

My little Musyenok, my sons!

I dedicate these lines to you!

When the thunder of war had not died down

I wrote my first poem

Under the roar of bombs and cannonades

I wrote then - how the battle went,

How courage grew in battles

I told about it to my fellows and friends

in my poem.

Оn July 9, 1943 the first Shipov’s victory was сovering «Il-2» attack fighters from the Pummanki airfield on the Sredny Peninsula. Shipov and pilot K.K. Meldizin fought against 6 enemy fighters. Shipov attacked the leader enemy. The German began to leave away. The Soviet fighter rushed after him. Coming close the «мesserschmitt» in a vertical maneuver Shipov got clean shots from a short distance.

Between battles and during rest moments Alexander Shipov read a lot, talked to his fellow soldiers, also he led some events at the Officers' Fleet House and even wrote poetry.
On September 16, 1943, Shipov became a regiment navigator.
In the summer of 1944, the Northern Fleet aviation made intensive raids on German convoys, naval bases and other enemy targets.

On September 26, 1944, the eight of our fighters led by captain Shipov supported a group of attack planes. As they approached the enemy convoy, the leader of the «eight» noticed two pairs of «Me-109» ready to attack. Shipov left 4 fighters with the attack planes and ordered a pair of fighters to rise up. He attacked the low four of the «109s» planes and got them into a fight. Also Shipov was able to shoot down one fascist plane. Meanwhile the strike group successfully did the mission.

For his brilliant completing of command tasks, his courage and bravery by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, November 5, 1944, captain Shipov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the «Gold Star» medal.

On November 15, 1944, Major Shipov was appointed as a chief of staff of the 78th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Northern Fleet Air Force.

Alexander Shipov expressed all his joy, pain and anxiety about his beloved ones in his letters.

Alexander Shipov’s letter to his wife and son dated November 21, 1944:
Hello, dear Musyenok! Today I received two of your letters at once. It is sad that our Valerik is sick all the time. I feel that you, my dear, are completely exhausted there and I have nothing to help you with. Naturally I do not blame myself for the letters I wrote earlier although there were reasons for that I will tell you someday. Do not pay attention to the cold style of my letters because I love you as much as I loved you. Sometimes I am really out of sorts. Tell my son that I send him cookies and sausages indeed. My dear! Don't worry if a long break after this letter would have been. You probably read in the newspapers that we are moving west and therefore there will be a delay with the mail. You may congratulate me with the rank of major. Well, be healthy, my dears. I kiss you tightly.

Yours Sashulya

In 1943 the film Wait for me was released on the screens of our country, the script and song writer was the famous poet and journalist, Konstantin Simonov. Alexander Shipov watched this film only in December 1944, he shared his impressions with his beloved Marusia in the letter below. This letter is published in the books by Alexander Kovalyov titled Wings of Love and Wings of Love: Frontline Letters of Northern Fleet Pilots, 1941–1945.
"Hello, my dear and beloved Musyenok! What a happiness to have your letters! It's already midnight, and I'm sitting here rereading several times what you and my little son have written! My dears! I want to be with you so much! It's impossible right now but I think that time has mercy on us and goes by faster as we want. My Musyenok! I wish you and our son Happy New Year. I hope that the New Year will be joyful and happy for us. You’ll see that once I told you about will be coming true. Celebrating the New Year I raise my glass to you as if I’d be together with you, my dears! I believe that you are waiting for me in the face of temptation. Recently I managed to watch the movie «Wait for me» for the first time. And I imagined you as if you were shown in that film. I understand waiting is so heavy. But that is what love is. Well, be healthy, my dear and my son. I kiss you both very, very much. Give my greetings and wishes a Happy New Year to your dad, mom, relatives and Klava. I also thank them for their letters because they add me the moral support. See you soon, my dears."
