Sergey Aleksandrovich Khudyakov

Sergey Aleksandrovich Khudyakov

(Khanferyants Armenak Artemovich)
Sergey Aleksandrovich Khudyakov held the rank of Air Marshall of the USSR. He was in charge of the Soviet delegation’s flight to the Teheran and Yalta conferences held together with the allies. In 1945, he headed the 12th Air Force Army, commanded the landing attack in Manchukuo, arrested Emperor Pu Yi and captured the gold reserve of Manchuria.

Sergey Khudyakov, whose real name was Khanferyants Armenak Artemovich, was born in the Nagorny Karabakh autonomous district in the town of Bolshoy Taglar in 1902.

In 1936 Sergey graduated from the N.Y. Zhukovskiy Air Force Academy.

„Armenak lost his father at an early age. When he was still a lad, he joined the Red Army to establish Soviet rule. Armenak, a smart and brave boy, got close to his squad’s commander Sergey Aleksandrovich Khudyakov, who became his mentor and like a second father to him. He taught Armenak to fight the enemy and led him into combat. Once he rescued the drowning boy from the boat that enemies sank. In his dying hours the wounded commander passed his military hat to Armenak and told him to wear it. „Let the enemies think that Khudyakov is still alive!” he said. Khanferyants did as his dear commander told him: he took his hat and his name as well.”

(„Reflections Before the Hero’s Portrait”, Ashot Grashi, the Kommunist newspaper, 1966, N7, 9 January, page 4).

In 1940 Sergey Khudyakov became commander of the air force headquarters in the Belarusian special military district.

„...he graduated the academy in the rank of Major and got assigned to the air force headquarters in Minsk. While serving there, he showed himself as a military officer of great abilities and talent. His friends, in their memoires, stressed his outstanding expertise and comprehensive knowledge. His profile wouldn’t be complete without pointing to the fact that Sergey Khudyakov was a brilliant public speaker with a good command of several foreign languages.”
(the excerpt from the Kommunist newspaper, 1961, N 138, 15 June, p. 4 — copy).

Brilliant Career

On the eve of WWII Colonel Khudyakov was the commander of the air forces in the Minsk military district. In 1942, when Khudyakov was in the rank of Air Lieutenant General, he led the air forces of the Western (Zapadny) Front. In the first few months of the war Sergey Khudyakov was promoted to Air Major General and then, in early May 1942, he was appointed headquarters commander of the air forces of the Soviet Army.

From June 1942 Sergey Khudyakov was the commander of the First Air Army, from May 1943 – the headquarters commander and deputy air force commander of the Soviet Army. Air force formations under Khudyakov’s command participated in the offensive of the Western Front in the direction of Rzhev and Sychevka and lent support to the troops engaged in the Rzhev—Vyaz’ma operations.

In 1943 Khudyakov coordinated combat activities of the Voronezhsky and Stepnoy Fronts during the battle of Kursk and the battle of Dnepr.

In 1944 Khudyakov became Air Marshall.

«Февраль 1945 года. Ялта. Здесь проходила известная Крымская конференция трех великих держав: Советского Союза, Соединенных Штатов Америки и Великобритании…В состав советской делегации, которую возглавлял И.В. Сталин, в качестве военного эксперта входил и маршал авиации Сергей Александрович Худяков»
(Казарян А., Война и люди. Книга 1, Е, 1975, С. 30-38).
In 1945 Sergey Khudyakov commanded the 12th Air Army, which took part in the defeat of the Japanese army in the Far East.

„I last saw Sergey Aleksandrovich Khudyakov on the eve of his departure for the Far East. I met with him briefly in one of the corridors of the air force headquarters. I still keep very lively recollections of this meeting: a black-haired man of small stature with an expansive forehead and a chiseled jaw. „Look, you’ve already finished the war, and I haven’t yet. We need to teach the Japanese a lesson,” he said to me at parting and gave me a tight hug.”

(«Командующий 1-й Воздушной армией Западного фронта», Александр Пронин, Литературная Армения, 1973, N 3).

Sergey Khudyakov was decorated with the Order of Lenin, two Orders of Red Banner, the Orders of Suvorov of First Grade and Second Grade, the Order of Kutuzov of First Grade, the Order of Red Star as well as several medals.
In December 1945, Marshall Khanferyants was arrested. He was accused of being a party to the theft of the trophy gold: the airplane that was used to transport it disappeared (it turned out later that it had crashed). Incidentally, there were some other alleged causes for the arrest. He was charged with concealing his true name and with being a spy. The „investigation” lasted for four years. Meanwhile, that transport airplane was discovered and Marshall Khanferyants was cleared of those charges. However, by the order of Interior Minister Beria he was taken to the Interior Ministry‘s pretrial custody, where his guilt was proved and he was executed by shooting.”

(„Life Similar to a Comet”, Robert Tovmasyan, Republic of Armenia, 2002, N 1, 11 – 18 January, p. 3).

„Sergey Khudyakov’s life closed in 1950. He died at the age of 48, in the prime of life and military glory. In his person the nation lost a prominent military leader...”
