Malik Malikovich Magerramov (1920 – 2004)

Soviet Army colonel. Hero of the Soviet Union. Head of the 1st Department of Baku State University, a member of Academic Council. A deputy to the district Soviet of the Baku City Executive Committee. M.M. Magerramov was repeatedly elected delegate to the Congress of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan.
Malik Malikovich Magerramov was born in Azerbaijan in 1920.
At the beginning of the war, Malik Magerramov, an assistant commander of the liaison platoon, was promoted to the rank of platoon commander. In August 1941, he was wounded but after recovery he returned to the front. In March 1942, after being discharged from hospital, Magerramov was sent to study at the Vladimir Infantry School, which he graduated in October 1942.

In August 1943, Malik Magerramov was appointed commander of the 218th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 77th Guards Rifle Division of the Central Front. Later on, Magerramov took command of the 5th Rifle Company of the Regiment. In late 1943, the Company under his command crossed the Desna River. In September 1943, Malik Magerramov was awarded the Order of Red Banner for his heroism in the combat operation.

Magerramov told about the battle to liberate Oryol: “We knew that our division was entrusted with a difficult and honorable task – to participate in the battle to liberate Oryol. We also knew that our battalion had to move forward. But we didn’t know we’d be one of the first to enter Oryol. All this was decided during the fighting. Although it was very fierce and the losses were significant, our company was one of the first to enter the city.”

The successful offensive of the regiments of the Guards Division continued. By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 15, 1944, Guard Lieutenant Malik Magerramov was decorated with the Order of Lenin and awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his exceptional courage and heroism shown in crossing the Dnieper and holding the bridgehead on the right bank.
“During the crossing of the Dnieper Guard Lieutenant M. Magerramov showed unparalleled courage and heroism, for which he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
We are proud to have such a fearless officer in our unit. On behalf of all the members of the unit we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for raising such a brave son.”

In November 1944, Malik Magerramov took command of the Rifle Battalion of the 215th Guards Rifle Regiment. He was promoted to captain of the guard.
In April 1945, when the Berlin operation began, Captain Magerramov was wounded again. It was a few days before the victory, not far away from Berlin. The shrapnel wound knocked him out. He was evacuated to the rear. Malik Magerramov met the day of Victory, 9th May, 1945, in a hospital in Kharkov. The company and battalion under his command reached Berlin and took part in the assault. Thus ended the Captain Malik Magerramov’s battle path.
For the sound leadership of the battalion and personal courage Malik was awarded the Order of Patriotic War of the 1st Grade in June 1945. He was also decorated with the medal «For Victory over Germany».

After the war Malik Malikovich Magerramov served in the army and became military commissar in several districts of the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic. After graduating from the Frunze Military Academy in 1954, Magerramov became chief of staff of the regiment. He retired as colonel in 1973. After his discharge from the army, he held several positions in the Communist Party of Azerbaijan and was the secretary of the party organization of Baku State University.
