Malik Gabdullin
The case story is provided by National Academic Library of Republic of Kazakhstan

Malik Gabdullin is a famous literary scholar, Doctor of Philology, professor, academician of Teachers’ Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Hero of the Soviet Union, honored scientific worker of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
He was born in the village of Zerenda in the erstwhile Kokchetav Oblast. From his early childhood Malik was eager to learn. At the age of 20, he graduated from the Abai State Teacher Training University. After he served in the military, he undertook postgraduate studies.
Malik Gabdullin (The Light of the Past)
Gabdullin started his academic career in 1938 when he took the position of junior researcher at the Kazakh branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His domain of interests included history and culture of the Kazakh people, distinctive nature and evolution of its oral lore and traditions. However, like with so many other people, Gabdullin’s academic plans were crippled by the outbreak of WWII.
"I am a Soldier

I am a Soldier of the Great Patriotic War. In these feature articles I showed how implacable some sons of the Kazakh people were in their fight against the hateful enemy for their beloved Motherland, for liberty, honor and happiness of their people. I wrote those lines in
dug-out shelters, in poorly-lit, completely ruined wooden cabins, in a roaring artillery barrage and a hurricane of whizzing bullets. All this made it more difficult for the author to concentrate and think over his writing. It is understandable to anyone.

Sons of the Kazakh people have accomplished great and magnificent deeds on the front that their people should be proud of. Their bravery and valiance, their heroic deeds ought to be described in epic poems, stories and tales… This is a task for writers, poets and akyns (Kazakh bards).

I told only about several Kazakh soldiers and described only a few episodes of their lives on the front, which made up for about a third of their valiant deeds and feats. I am going to write about them in more detail as soon as the war is over.

We are Kazakhs. We are a tribe of batyrs, who have been glorified throughout the centuries…Those batyrs’ grandchildren have accomplished heroic deeds on the fronts of the Patriotic War, leaving the world amazed at their valiance and bravery. As long as such batyrs are among us, the Kazakh people will tolerate neither degrading humiliation, nor disgrace of dishonor. On the contrary, their glory is set to shine and rise higher and higher. The Great Patriotic War has provided ample evidence to that!"

They knocked out two German tanks, killed a lot of fascists and took 12 Germans as prisoners. Gabdullin was wounded in the fight. But he didn’t leave the battlefield.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR of 30 January 1943, Malik Gabdullin was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as the Order of Lenin and the medal “Golden Star”.
"Speaking personally, I have never had any such dreams of accomplishing a feat or acquiring the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. To do my duty by my Motherland was all I wished for. It’s up to the people to judge my deeds. The one who does his duty faithfullydeserves to be respected and honored."
From the letter to poet Kainekey Zharmagambetov of 10 September 1944).
The wartime revealed Malik’s talent for writing. His poetry and short stories conveying human feelings and tragic experiences quickly gained popularity. The great Dzhambul (Dzhabayev) spoke highly of his creativity.
"His personality has many traits, such as Consideration, Intelligence, Liberality, Valiance and Learnedness, Frankness and Impartiality, Politeness and Gentleness, Kindness and Thoughtfulness! He is as pure as a newly born child, he is impeccable. He is as clear as the blue skies and ever young like spring."
