Tamara Aleksandrovna Maksimova, a WWII veteran, the Chair of the Council of Veterans of the Panfilov Division and the Moscow Guardians.
Tamara Aleksandrovna Maksimova was born on 23 April 1924.
From the interview to Kazinform:
«I was born in Moscow. When the war broke out, I finished the ninth grade. When I heard the USSR Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov announce that the war had broken out, I was inexperienced and therefore glad that I would learn first hand (not from the books) what the war was like and would take part in it».
Tamara was commissioned to Hospital № 5018 on Volokolamskoye Shosse to work at first as administrator and then as a nurse.
As remembered by Tamara Maksimova, trucks and buses brought the wounded to the hospital, where Tamara worked, right from the battlefields. The seriously wounded were taken further rearward, but those whose wounds were not critical stayed in her hospital. On such days the hospital personnel moved heaven and earth to get the wounded back on their feet as soon as possible: they washed them, changed the bandages, and prepared them for surgical operations.
In the interview to Kazinform, Tamara said:
«My colleagues and I would never consider our work heroic. We viewed it as our duty and we were happy to be able to participate in the fight against the fascism.»

The WWII veteran continues to tell how the doctors urged her and other nurses to give special care to those wounded who had lost their limbs. They explained it by pointing to those patients’ oppressed moods and feelings of being worthless. So the nurses comforted them, encouraged to have a prosthesis made, tried to cheer them up, and even promised to be waiting for them.

In May 1943, Tamara was injured in land mine blast, underwent a long treatment and retired from active service for reasons of health.

The news of the Victory brought about significant changes in people’s lives. For valour and preseverance Tamara Maksimova was decorated with the Patriotic War Order of the Second Grade, the Medal „For the Defense of Moscow” and other rewards.
Here are her reminiscences of the Victory Day.
«When this cursed war came to an end, all people took to streets, and nobody remained indoors! Moscow was overcrowded... Certainly, how can I forget it! People celebrated in the streets until sunrise. People sang and danced in jubilation. Even strangers hugged each other as if they were one family and congratulated each other on the Victory...» (from the video).
Tamara Maksimova graduated from a higher education institution and got married to military officer Konstantin Maksimov. He got stationed all over the USSR, and she followed him.

«Then I married one of my former wounded patients. People jokingly said that I ‘bandaged’ him forever to myself. Now we’ve been living together in love and harmony for over 60 years.»
Later on, Tamara defended her dissertation and was granted the Candidate of Sciences diploma. She worked in the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University for 16 years.
