Zuleikha G. Seidmamedova (1919–1999)

Zuleikha Seidmamedova is a Soviet military officer, Azerbaijani political figure and stateswoman. The first female military aviator of Azerbaijan. A fighter pilot. The Minister of Social Security of the Azerbaijani Republic in 1952 – 1975.
Zuleikha was born in March 1919. In 1938, she graduated from the Institute and received the specialty of oil engineer. Then she entered the Air Force Academy named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky and was the first female student at the navigation faculty. Graduated from the Academy in 1941. She trained 75 pilots and 80 paratroopers in the three years of her work as an instructor.

Zuleikha Seidmamedova was an active fighter in the women’s fighter aviation regiment. She held the rank of captain and was the deputy commander of the regiment. Seidmamedova conducted more than 500 combat flights and more than 40 air battles. In late 1941, she was appointed as pilot-navigator of the newly created 586th Female Fighter Aviation Regiment. Being in this unit, Zuleikha took part in the air combat missions during the Battle of Stalingrad and was decorated with the medal «For the Defense of Stalingrad». She also participated in the Battle of Kursk and in the Korsun-Shevchenko operation. Zuleikha was awarded the Order of the Great Patriotic War of the 2nd Grade.

In her book Zuleikha recalled the last hours of the Korsun-Shevchenko operation:
“The Korsun tragedy went on all through the night. At dawn, with a deafening Russian “Hooray!”, our infantry marched on to storm the city in the thick of a blizzard. By the morning of 17 February, there was a deep silence over the Korsun fields. The 14-day battle, which went on uninterrupted days and nights, came to an end…”
In August 1945, Zuleikha met the end of the war in Bucharest as deputy commander of the 586th Female Fighter Aviation Regiment.
Here’s what she wrote in her book, “Notes of Airwoman”, Baku, 1963.-94 с. :
“It is a hot August afternoon. The houses of Bucharest can be seen far away in the distance, beyond the airfield. It is here, in Romania, that the 586th Female Fighter Aviation Regiment finished its battle path.”

In 1944, Zuleikha Seidmamedova was decorated with the Order of Lenin for the excellent performance of a military task.
Her combat decorations included the Order of Lenin, the Order of Red Star, the Order of Patriotic War of the Second Grade, the medal “For the Victory over Germany”, the two Orders of Red Banner of Labour and the two “Orders of Badge of Honor“.
After the war Zuleikha Seidmamedova returned to Baku.
In 1946 – 1951, Zuliekha Seidmamedova chaired the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League of Azerbaijan. In 1952 – 1975, she held the post of Minister for Social Security of Azerbaijan and, later on, the deputy chair of the Presidium of the Azerbaijani Society of Friendship and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries. She was elected Deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic of the second, sixth and eighth convocations.
