IVAN STEPANOVICH ISAKOV
The Story is Provided by the National LIbrary of Armenia

Ivan S. Isakov is a prominent Soviet naval сommander, Admiral of the Fleet of the USSR, Hero of the Soviet Union (7.5.1965) and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958).

Ivan Stepanovich Isakov was born in the village of Adzhikend (Azerbaijan) on 22 August 1894. He finished the drift fishery courses for commanding officers of ships (1919) and the advanced management courses at the Naval Academy (1928). Beginning February 1917, he served as midshipman on the Izyaslav destroyer and in 1918 he was an assistant commander of the destroyer during the crusade of the Baltic Fleet in the Arctic Ocean.

„Ivan Stepanovich Isakov belongs to the pleiad of prominent Soviet military leaders, which accumulated a vast personal expertise in the combat operations of WWI and the Civil War.”

Literary Armenia, 1969, N 8, p. 47

In early 1941, Ivan S. Isakov was appointed head of the Main Naval Headquarters.
„On 30 June 1941, he wrote to Olga Vasilievna in Tallinn: „Do not exagerrate navy horrors around us... This is my fourth war. I am sensible to the point of despair. I profit by every occasion to have some sleep and to have something to eat. Certainly, this war is no match to those which I have endured so far and which tested me out. But I hope we will win. I can forsee it clearly, just as clearly as I forsaw this war... Only keep calm. Carry on working, with your teeth clenched and wait for universal happiness and our happiness to come. Love, Ivan”

(Long, Long Sailing. Hero of the Soviet Homeland, Vladimir Rudny, Е., 1974)

In the first few months of the war Ivan S. Isakov was assigned to most difficult flashpoint areas. While in Leningrad he coordinated the combat operations of the ground troops and the naval forces: Baltic Fleet, Ladoga Lake Fleet and Chudskoe Lake Fleet, which were part of the defense of the city.
In October 1941, Ivan S. Isakov developed the landing operation on Kerch Peninsula together with the commanders of the Black See Fleet and the Transcaucasian Front.
As a member of the Military Council of the Front Ivan S. Isakov took part in organizing the naval defense of Leningrad and the lifeline across Lake Ladoga. The Ladoga Lake Fleet under Isakov’s command had a paramount importance because it delivered supplies to the front and evacuated the Leningrad dwellers from the city.
„Isakov showed himself as a talented military leader who was quick and effective in making decisions on flashpoint areas, never backed down. He was successful in defending see routes, encircling the enemy naval forces, destroying them and their homeports.”

Republic of Armenia, 1999, N182, 25 September, p.2

From April 1942 Isakov was a deputy commander-in-chief and a member of the Military Council of the North Caucasian direction (later on, the North Caucasian Front). He also coordinated the military activities of the Black Sea Fleet and the ground troops, he was in charge of the logistical support for the city of Sevastopol.
„In October 1942, during the regular inspection of the frontline near Tuapse, Ivan Isakov was badly wounded in the enemy air raid. He had an operation and had his leg taken off. But the disability did not prevent Isakov from continuing to defend his homeland until the war ended in the decisive victory.”

After the Great Victory over the armed forces of Germany and Japan and their allies, Isakov was put in charge of the Main Headquarters of the Navy. From 1947 he was a deputy commander-in-chief of the Navy responsible for researching and utilizing the WWII experience. Isakov authored a number of research articles. An antisubmarine warship was named after Ivan S. Isakov to perpetuate his achievements in the Navy.
There was an idea sweeping continuously through my mind that my true place is on the ship on which my friends and I bear responsibility before the nation and that in the cold waters of Gulf of Finland I defend not only Russia, but also Armenia. I live by Armenia. I love dearly my creative people. I wish I could see Armenia’s beautiful ravines and magnificent woods of Lori, blue Lake Sevan; I wish I could stand up on the top of Nork surrounded by orchards and admire our splendid Yerevan – Mother of the Armenian towns... I did my best to look up to Amiral Serebryakov, General Madatov, Lazarev, Ter-Gukasov and others (though I am still far from being equal to them)”, wrote Ivan Isakov.

In May 1965, 20 years after the Victory of the Soviet people and the anti-Hitler Coalition allies over Germany and Japan, naval commander Ivan Isakov was awarded the „Golden Star” of Hero of the Soviet Union. Among the Admiral’s rewards were two Orders of Ushakov of First Grade, the Order of Patriotic War of First Grade, numerous medals as well as three foreign orders.
