Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev

The history is provided by the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan
Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev is a WWII veteran and a Red Army officer. People’s Hero of Kazakhstan. On 30 April 1945, during the assault of Berlin Koshkarbayev and Grigory Bulatov were the first to hoist the red flag on the Reichstag’s facade.

Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev was born in the village of Nura (presently the settlement of Oktyabr, Tselinograd Region) in 1924. In 1942, when Rakhimzhan turned 18, he was called into the Red Army. Beginning 1944, after Rakhimzhan graduated from the Frunze Military Infantry College, he fought as platoon commanader on the battle fronts (the 150th Idritsa Division of the First Belorussian Front) for freedom of his Soviet Homeland. Koshkarbayev took part in the liberation of Poland and in the heroic battles that led to the complete victory over fascist Germany.
By the end of the war lieutenant Koshkarbayev headed an intelligence support platoon in the 674th Rifle Regiment of the 150th Rifle Division. As such he reached Berlin. Lieutenant Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev and enlisted soldier Grigory Bulatov were the first to hoist their regiment’s red banner on the Reichstag’s fronton. The fact that the banner looked like a piece of cloth, didn’t bother the soldiers. Later on, similar banners appeared in different places all over the Reichstag. But all commanders, including Marshall Zhukov, knew that Koshkarbayev and Bulatov’s banner was the first to appear.
From Koshkarbayev’s recollections:
«When we approached the Reichstag, I wrote our names in the corner of the banner’s cloth: „Grigory Bulatov, Koshkarbayev, Rifle Regiment № 674”. Grigory Bulatov approved of my writing by saying:”You are right, Lieutenant, to have written down our names. Otherwise, in case we get killed, nobody will know about us coming so close and who we are and from what regiment”. Then I answered him: „Grigory, we have come here not to die but to carry out the order – to plant the red banner. Once the war is over, you and me, we will be like brothers; as you know I have no family, I was brought up in an orphanage”. The fighting continued until 2 May. Since that time 30 April has been a special day, kind of birthday for me».
According to Koshkarbayev, he and Grigory Bulatov crawled some 260 meters in more than seven hours.

For this act of valour the regiment’s commanders submitted Koshkarbayev’s and Bulatov’s nomination for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Everything was in the pipeline but... Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev was only decorated with the Red Banner Order. Lots of people, including Baurzhan Momyshuly, a hero of the famous Panfilov Division, interceded for Rakhimzhan. However, Stalin was reluctant. The fact was, Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev’s father was declared enemy of the people.

According to the 150th Rifle Division’s record book, on 30 April 1945, 2:25 pm, Lieutenant Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev and enlisted soldier Grigory Bulatov „wormed their way to the central part of the building and put up the red banner on the grand staircase”. Hero of the Soviet Union I.F. Klochkov wrote in his book, We assaulted the Reichstag: „Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev was the first to get the red banner fastened to the column”.
From documents and newspapers
In the post-WWII years Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev took active part in the economic reconstruction, held important positions in the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic and was a prominent public figure.
According to Rakhimzhan’s daughter Aliya, every year on 9 May her family celebrated the Victory: they laid the table, invited guests and treated them with national cuisine dishes.
"However, on that day Father was always reserved and quiet. I could never tell by his looks what was on his mind. I gather it is the war that made him so hardened. On 9 May, he knew he would be invited to various events, and we would invite guests to our home as usual...but he never shared his thoughts, particularly about the war, - never would he make his thoughts public.”

Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev authored several books, The Victory Banner, The Assault, aptly depicting the battle history and heroic deeds of the Soviet Army. His books seek to further military and patriotic upbringing of the youth.

Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev was decorated with the Order of Red Combat Banner, the Patriotic War Order of the First Grade, and the Medals «For the Capture of Berlin» and «For the Liberation of Warsaw». For his feat in the Reichstag he was awarded the Order of Red Combat Banner.

Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev passed away in 1988. Posthumously he was awarded the title of Khalyk Kakharmany («People’s Hero») by Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s decree of 7 May 1999.
