VLADIMIR VICTOROVICH OUSKOV (1907–1980)

Vladimir Ouskov – actor of the Leningrad Comedy Theater, People's Artist of the RSFSR. During the Great Patriotic War, he led the concert brigade of the theater agitation platoon of the Leningrad Red Army House under S.M. Kirov. He participated in concert programs and performances, performed for the soldiers of the Leningrad Front and residents of besieged Leningrad.

Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov was born on June 21 (July 4) in St. Petersburg. He gained his first theater experience as a schoolboy in the Petrograd Wandertheater “The First Swallow”. In 1923-1925, under the supervision of A.N. Morozov, he learned the basics of acting in the studio theater at the Gubprofsovet (Provincial Council of Trade Unions). He tried himself in various variety (pop) and drama groups, as well as in operetta. He continued his drama education in 1928-1930 at the Leningrad Technical School of Stage Arts in the studio of L.S. Kuznetsov. С. Vivien and V.V. Sladkopevtsev. In the 1930s he played on the stages of the Leningrad Bolshoi Drama Theater and Rostov Drama Theater. In 1937 he returned to Leningrad and was admitted to the New Youth Theater, there the characteristic and comic talent of the actor was fully revealed in his performances.
Vladimir Victorovich Ouskov
In July 1941, with the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov joined the militia with a troupe of theater actors and participated in the battles near Weimarn (Leningrad region).
V.V.Ouskov’s letter from the front to his wife, N.B.Ouskova. July 25, 1941.
After a month of gory battles, the artists were withdrawn to Leningrad in connection with the decision of the Political Department of the Leningrad Front to form the Theater of the People's Militia under the leadership of People's Artist of the Republic N. K. Cherkasov. The withdrawal order was delivered to the division headquarters only on the third attempt. At the time, the actor himself was on a reconnaissance mission, and he had to catch up with his comrades alone under a barrage of enemy fire. The theater was given the premises of the First Five-Year Plan Cultural Center. The artists, who were transferred to barracks, also settled there. The theater troupe comprised not only dramatic performers, artists of the philharmonic, circus, variety, ballet, opera singers and musicians, but also poets, dramaturgs and composers (including D.D. Shostakovich). The repertoire was urgently prepared and the concerts began.
Natalia Borisovna Ouskova
In September 1941, the city was completely besieged. Ouskov refused to evacuate with the troupe of the New Youth Theater, and he and his wife stayed in Leningrad. Natalya Borisovna Ouskova was finishing her studies at the 2nd Leningrad Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. Concurrently with her studies, she worked on the construction of defensive fortifications, in evacuation hospitals, and later she was a librarian at a defense factory. Vladimir Viktorovich stayed in the theater, and with the transfer of the People's Militia to the cadre army it was called the Leningrad front agitation platoon, was attached to the 56th Infantry Division (former 7th Division of the People's Militia) and stationed in the Leningrad House of the Red Army (now the House of Officers).Over time, the group became known as the Theater Agitation Platoon of the Leningrad Red Army House named after S.M. Kirov.

From the very first days of the war, 14 artistic brigades and groups were attached to the Leningrad Red Army House. Among them were the Red Army Song and Dance Ensemble under the leadership of A.I. Anisimov, the circus brigade under E.P. Gershuni (later - the Front Circus),Jazz Ensemble under K.I. Shulzhenko and Komsomol-Youth Brigade under F. Coralli.Together with them, the members of the agitation platoon lived in the Red Army House, practiced, from here they went to the front with concerts. B.L. Brodyansky became the artistic director of the group. The agitation platoon consisted of four concert brigades; the leadership of the 4th brigade was entrusted to V.V. Ouskov.

Almost all the performances took place in the units of the active army. It was not easy for exhausted and weary actors to get there. Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov recalled:
“All starving, with graying and puffy faces, with frostbitten hands and feet, we made our way to our frontline audience. We went there along highways and dirt roads, along forest paths and snow-coated fields, dragging sledges with ordinary theatrical and personal belongings - we had no strength to carry them in sacks. Sometimes we had to walk twenty-five kilometers in thirty-degree cold, to perform in the rear and on the front line, under the wing of an airplane, in dugouts, in forest glades and ship decks in the morning, afternoon, evening, night... We were obliged to remain creatively focused in any situation and, most importantly, indefatigable”.

“In the struggle for life, what helped the most was the confidence that your work was doing good. And fortunately, we received constant confirmation of this. On the most difficult days, one of the highest displays of humanity - humor - came to our aid.”

During the most difficult period of the blockade - autumn 1941 - spring 1942, The brigades of the agitation platoon gave an incredible number of concerts and performances. On June 14, 1942 near Kolpino, in the location of the 56th Infantry Division, the thousandth anniversary concert of the artists was held.

In the spring of 1942,the decision to prepare a grand performance was made.In the autumn, the platoon split into two main units - concert and drama brigades, by the efforts of which was staged a play by K.M. Simonov “Russian People” (directed by V. N. Lebedev). In this play, Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov performed the role of a military paramedic Ivan Globa with great success.Among the actors involved in the performance were members of the Theater agitation platoon, artists of the Leningrad Bolshoi Drama Theater Efim Kopelyan, Nikolai Korn, Vera Osokina, Viktor Chaynikov, actors of the New Youth Theater Sergei Emelyanov, Fyodor Nikitin and other artists of Leningrad theaters.

A strict art critic Andrei Andreevich Bartoshevich, who worked in the Department of Arts of the Executive Committee of the Leningrad City Council during the war, wrote in his diary on September 1, 1942: “I saw ‘Russian People’ in the House of the Red Army. A good performance, with interesting, poignant details”. Next to this note, A.A. Bartoshevich pasted an invitation to the performance.

Among other performances of the group were ‘Front’ by A.E. Korneichuk (V.V. Ouskov played the role of the front commander Ivan Gorlov), ‘Bratishka’ (or ‘Little Brother’) by V.A. Dykhovichny. With the performances ‘Front’ and ‘Russian People’ artists traveled all over the Leningrad front. The director of the lyrical comedy “Bratishka” was Ouskov himself. It was played only a few times though: in May 1943, by order of the Political Department of the Leningrad Front, the Theater Agitation Platoon was dissolved. After demobilization some of the actors joined the newly created City Theatre, Ouslov was among them. The same year Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov was awarded the medal “For the Defense of Leningrad”.

In the personal archive of V.V. Ouskov, kept in the St. Petersburg Theater Library, there are documents that talk about the life in Leningrad during the Siege - the memoirs of Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov “The Muses who did not want to be silent”, the author's copy of the diary of Natalia Borisovna Ouskova, which she kept in 1941-1942, as well as their correspondence.

While Vladimir Viktorovich left with his concert brigade to perform for the soldiers of the Leningrad Front, Natalya Borisovna stayed in the besieged city, waiting for him. In her diary she kept her blockade chronicle. It contains not only a chronology of life in the siege, it is also a story of love and incredible resilience in inhumane conditions. They both survived thanks to each other.

In 1945 Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov was awarded the medal “For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” and the Red Star Order. The award list, compiled by the head of the Theater Agitation Platoon of the Leningrad Red Army House named after S.M. Kirov, Colonel N.S. Lazarev, stated:

As aconcert brigade performer of the Red Star Order of the Red Army House, Mr. Ouskov performed in the active units of the Leningrad Front from the very first days of the Great Patriotic War. Artist Ouskov excellently performed the role of Globa in the play “Russian People” by K. Simonov. This play was repeatedly performed to the front audience and played a great political and educational value. “Let's be like Globa” - said the soldiers of the Leningrad Front after watching the performance with Ouskov. ActorOuskov performed in the active units of the Leningrad Front more than 1000 times. All Mr. Ouskov’s performances were of a great success and received the approval of the Red Army audience.”

After the war, Vladimir Viktorovich Ouskov was an actorat the Leningrad Comedy Theater from 1948 until late 70s. In 1957 he received the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR.

In the 90s Natalia Borisovna Ouskova transferred the actor's personal archive to the St. Petersburg State Theater Library. She also gave some of the materials to the national museum “And the Muses were not silent...” (secondary school № 235 museum after D.D. Shostakovich in St. Petersburg). This is how precious testimonies of the Great Patriotic War, the defense of Leningrad and its siege days, captured in the documents of Vladimir Viktorovich and Natalia Borisovna Ouskovs, are preserved today.
